An approach to amplify movement and injury prevention: arrangement of qualitative and quantitative movement methods that reconcile objective and subjective knowledge regarding dance movement.
More often than not, Dance is overlooked as an athletic sport. However, in recent years, a growing body of knowledge is supporting the opposite. Dance, while beautiful and entertaining, has become an aggressive, ballistic, and cardiorespiratory sport. This has been evidenced by the recent addition of Hip-Hop to the 2021 Olympic Games and the further study of athletic movement in Dance. In 2018, Dr. Shaw Bronner, a
consultant for the Alvin Ailey American Dance theater in New York City, outline
the most common dance injuries and the Pre-season Movement and Strength assessment methods by which these injuries can be prevented.
Furthermore, Dr. Bronner was able to utilize a preseason screening to aide in the analysis of common injuries and the prevention of such injuries. She implemented this successfully over a 15 year period. During that 15 year period, she analyzed a professional dance company and discovered that in a 3 year period she had a 64% reduction in overall time-loss injuries, totaling a $861,000 savings in injury claims. This staggering dollar amount has prompted many dance companies and studios to implement quality and control measures to address the areas of technique, strength, and flexibility. The most successful programs address the overall risk factors that have found to be common to the dance community.
Dance Motion Analysis addresses all of the areas that peer reviewed evidence states that is important. This assessment will consist of addressing 5 key areas of interest. Leveraging technology and science driven knowledge will also be utilized to create an exact measure of movement.
